Devarayanadurga Hills

Devarayanadurga is a breathtaking hill station surrounded by lush reserve forests, situated at an altitude of 3,940 feet. It is famous for its rocky terrain, beautiful trekking paths, and the historic twin temples of Lord Narasimha. At the base of the hill lies the Bhoga Narasimha Temple, while the Yoga Narasimha Temple is perched at the very summit, reachable by climbing 100+ stone steps. The hills offer a panoramic view of the district's green valleys and rocky peaks, making it a favorite spot for both pilgrims and nature enthusiasts.

The reserve forest surrounding Devarayanadurga is home to diverse wildlife, including leopards, wild boars, barking deer, and a vast array of birds. The cool breeze at the hilltop, coupled with the early morning fog, makes it feel like a mini hill station close to the capital city. The winding roads leading to the summit offer a scenic driving experience through dense green canopies and rocky cliffs.

Historically, the hill served as a strategic military outpost due to its natural elevation and defensive terrain. The fort walls, temples, and step-wells (kalyanis) built on the hill show the brilliance of the Vijayanagara and Wodeyar rulers, who recognized the site's strategic and spiritual value.

Do not throw plastic packets or bottles in the forest. Wrap them and carry them back to the base.

Do not feed the wild monkeys at the hilltop; it disrupts their natural diet and can make them aggressive.

Keep to the designated trekking trails to avoid disturbing the nesting sites of local birds and reptiles.

Drive slowly and avoid honking within the reserve forest limits to prevent stressing the forest wildlife.

Located 15 km East of Tumakuru via Urdigere Road. Private cabs or personal vehicles are recommended, though state buses connect Tumakuru to Urdigere regularly.

September to February is ideal. The mornings are cool and misty. The entry gate closes at 6:00 PM for security.

Easy to Moderate. The climb to the Yoga Narasimha temple involves about 120 stone steps equipped with safety handrails.

A minor vehicle entry fee of Rs. 20 is collected by the forest department at the check post.
